I hope everybody’s opening days went well, mine did. Northern Pike, Walleyes, and Perch all done with their spawning rituals. Muskies, Bass, Crappie, and Sunfish families should be getting started for their turn.

All of you should remember some important dates for your fishing calendar: in Wisconsin game fish opened May 5th, Muskies will open May 26th, and Bass will open June 16th. On our border lakes with Michigan, Muskies will open May 15th and Bass opens June 16th. In Michigan game fish opens May 15th, Bass opens on May 26th. You should refer to your states appropriate Fishing regulations to verify any dates or changes that have taken place for this year.

Northern Pike: Jig and minnow combos along weed edges and spoons like the Johnson silver minnow should be in your arsenal for these eager fish to bite onto.

Walleyes: At this time a good mix of 1/16, 1/8, and 1/4 ounce jigs tipped with fathead minnows, or slip bobbers fished on new weed growth edges to rock and soft bottom transitions should get you a good mess of eyes for a fish fry.

Crappies: Slip bobbers and crappie minnows in the weeds if you still find some spawning or fish the weed edge or cribs.

Perch: Small jigs and or slip bobbers with small minnows on weed edges is where you will find these fish.

Sunfish: Slip bobbers and small jig or a #6 Aberdeen hook tipped with wax worms or red worms should do the trick for you on these fish.

Happy fishing! Selective harvest is the way to go.
